#ChallengeTheProcess: Why language can help us to connect

In celebration of UNESCO’s International Mother Language Day, I wanted to share my own story on growing up in a bilingual family and why language plays an integral role in our lives.

Bilingual beginnings

In my household, asking a question in English and getting a French response (or vice versa) was normal. Getting stuck for words and slipping into the other language made perfect sense to me. I felt lucky to understand two languages and be connected to two countries.

It wasn’t always easy, though. I remember when I first started going to school in the UK – I sometimes struggled to follow what was going on in class, and of course joining in playground games was difficult. It was a huge adjustment, but it was also the start of a deep-rooted love for language.

I went on to study a degree in English and Classics, and completed my MA dissertation on the difference between spoken and written poetry in 1st Century Rome.

With such a linguistic past, it’s hardly surprising that I began my career in content and strategic communications. I know how important language is in bringing together individuals and groups. As Eximia’s Head of Strategic Communications, I use these skills to bridge the gap between employers and employees, helping people feel connected to their organisation.

Good communication matters

Language can bring people together, but it can also be a barrier. When we’re not on the same page, we’re left feeling confused, vulnerable and disengaged. So, how can you get your communications right to make sure everyone feels included?

Good communication is all about giving people the information they need in the place, time, format and language that works for them. At its best, communication empowers people to make the best decisions for themselves and their families. To be inclusive, it needs to be accessible and jargon-free. That means using the right words, of course – but it’s should also be creative, using visual elements and prompts to engage and educate.

That’s what we’re passionate about at Eximia. We help our clients bridge the gap between their reward and their people. And with such a personal attachment to language, I’m always proud of the exceptional work we produce and positive outcomes for clients. We’re experts at creating educational and engaging content, and our translation service means you can reach your employees, whatever language they speak.
